Give God The Glory!

Whether it’s singing in a band, or anything you do in life really, you find that you are either your own biggest fan, or your own worst critic.
For me personally, I’m afraid I’m the latter.

I’m not sure why I’m that way to be honest, I suppose I can attribute it to being such a late bloomer growing up.
But a lot of times I get extremely insecure & frustrated, with both myself & my family, when I think that “We aren’t good enough” or “We don’t practice enough” or (my personal favorite) “Other bands don’t do it like that.”

Now there’s nothing wrong with wanting to do your absolute best. In fact, there are a lot of Bible verses that tell you to do just that…so long as you are doing it for the right reasons (Colossians 3:17 comes to mind).
But if being the best at what you do is your primary goal, that’s where you’ve got a problem.

Cause first of all, no matter what you do in this life, there’s always going to be someone better than you. More talented, more skilled, heck, even better looking.

But God didn’t call us to “Be the best”. He didn’t save us from our sins so we could “be successful”. He saved us so we could worship Him & serve Him & give Him glory.

Now here’s what I’m not saying. I’m not saying “success is bad” or “you shouldn’t try your best”, Go for it! But I’m saying do it for the right reasons.

Cause chasing your own glory instead of giving it to the One who truly deserves it is not only an impossible feat, it’s a dangerous one.

I can’t tell you how many other bands I’ve encountered down this road (that aren’t bands anymore) that cared very little to not at all about God’s glory & all about their own.

And my absolute biggest fear is that we’ll become one of them.
Cause that’s the beginning of the end.

And as someone who spends a lot of time on stage, it is so easy to get to that point it scares me!

It starts out with a seemingly harmless compliment:
“Oh you did such a good job.” “You’re the best group I’ve ever heard.” “You guys should be on tv!”
Then that seed of pride is planted & the devil will start blowing smoke your way & all of a sudden, you start believing your own press & you begin to think that you’re “all that & a bag of chips”.
Then all of a sudden, the trapdoor swings, & your laying in the dirt wondering what hit you. Proverbs 16:18 is very clear.

There are multiple accounts in God’s word where a few of his servants got a little too big for their britches (to borrow a southern term) & paid dearly for it.
From being cast out of heaven like lucifer (Ezekiel 28), to losing everything like King Nebuchadnezzar(Daniel 4). Some even paying with their own lives!

This is something that God takes very seriously & if we are wise, we will too.

So my prayer today is that I do the best I can, both on stage & off, to give God the glory He so truly deserves & not worry or fret about things that, in the end, don’t matter.
